Page 1 of 5 It is estimated that 40% of Americans are nearsighted and another 40% are farsighted. Chances are, you're a part of that group or know someone who is - and you're probably looking for an alternative to glasses or contact lenses. Laser vision correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism has gained widespread acceptance as a safe, comfortable and reliable way to correct vision. In fact, millions of people across the country now see refractive surgery as just another alternative to glasses or contact lenses. Most people know at least one person who has had a refractive procedure. We also offer a 0% Financing option for our LASEK and refractive procedures. Please click on the Financing link to apply. LASEK(also known as ASA, Advanced Surface Ablation)LASEK (Laser Assisted Subepithelial Keratectomy) or ASA (Advanced Surface Ablation) is a safer modification of the LASIK procedure. It was developed to reduce the chance of complications that occur when the flap created during LASIK is not the ideal thickness or diameter. LASEK is a substantial improvement over past procedures in that it is performed without a flap and with no cutting on the eye. Dr. Cole will first remove the epithelium (or outer layer of the cornea) using a mild solution that loosens the epithelial cells. He then uses the Star4 excimer laser, as in LASIK or PRK, to sculpt the corneal tissue underneath the removed epithelial cells. More of the cornea is exposed for treatment than with LASIK, making Advanced Surface Ablation a better choice for patients who require greater vision correction. A contact lens is inserted after the procedure and protects the epithelium as it regenerates for 3-5 days following surgery. The contact lens is then removed after the epithelial growth is complete. The contact lens, also called the bandage contact lens, protects the patient from discomfort as well as protects the growth of the new epithelial cells. The entire LASEK procedure takes only 15-30 minutes per eye, and patients are often ready to leave our Ambulatory Surgery center within an hour or two. Patients may experience sensitivity following the procedure, but this will subside shortly after the healing process is complete. On average, the healing process is 5-7 days total. Antibiotic eye drops will be prescribed to use following the surgery, along with other over-the-counter medications such as Vitamin C--1000 mg daily, Flax Seed Oil, and Ibuprofen. Visit www.personalbestvision.com for more information. The Latest TechnologyAt Boozman-Hof we now use the VISX Star4 ActiveTrak Excimer Laser system for refractive surgery. Recently, the STAR4 system was granted FDA approval for Iris Registration and continues to be the only FDA approved CustomVue treatment for high myopia (near-sightedness) and hyperopia (far-sightedness). The VISX STAR4 incorporates numerous advanced features, including an active eye-tracking system, variable beam technology, a faster chair with greater alignment flexibility, and a facial alignment laser projector. These features have established the STAR4 ActiveTrak as the new "gold standard" in excimer laser technology. We also feature Wavefront technology, which allows our surgeon to perform customized LASEK and other refractive surgeries using information gathered from the patient's individual corneal and iris patterns. This allows for a "truly" customized procedure. Should you have refractive surgery? If you are considering refractive surgery, you should seek the advice of our trained refractive coordinator. Call 479-246-1820 to schedule your FREE consultation for refractive surgery today! Our Refractive Surgeon, Dr. Randall E. Cole, is highly trained and experienced in vision correction surgery and has performed over 10,000 refractive procedures since 1985. LASEK and Glasses LASEK, like any surgical procedure, is never guaranteed. Studies show that approximately 98% of patients achieve their best corrected vision or better. However, each individual is different. Some patients may need glasses for night driving. More than likely, you'll need reading glasses around the age of 40 as presbyopia symptoms are brought on by natural changes to the lens of the eye due to aging.
