Glaucoma Diagnosis and SurgeryGlaucoma is when the pressure inside the eye rises high enough to damage the optic nerve. The condition often develops over many years without causing pain - so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. Regular eye exams and early detection are critical. Symptoms include blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, halo effects around lights and painful or reddened eyes. We are proud to announce the latest addition to our Medical Staff- Dr. Steven D. Vold. He is the 1st Fellowship Trained Glaucoma Subspecialist to Northwest Arkansas. Call 246-1700 to schedule with Dr. Vold today! TrabectomeTrabectome is an FDA cleared device for minimally invasive surgical treatment of open angle glaucoma. Trabectome safely ablates and removes a strip of trabecular meshwork and re-establishes access to the eye’s natural drainage pathway. This procedure is designed to improve fluid drainage from the eye and lower intraocular pressure in order to stabilize optic nerve and visual field damage. This procedure is performed as an outpatient (same day) procedure in an operating room with no need for hospital admission. The surgery requires approximately 30 minutes in the operating room and an additional hour to ensure recovery from sedation. This surgery is substantially less risky and less likely to be complicated than traditional filtering surgeries such as trabeculectomy. It is performed through a small incision and does not require leaving a permanent hole in the eye wall or creation of an external filtering bleb (fluid collection on the outside of the eye).
