Read what a BoozmanHof cataract patient had to say.
Thank you BoozmanHof, I can report that my treatment for cataract surgery was excellent. My term of service for this diagnosis commenced over a year ago when another BoozmanHof doctor, Dr. Jim Myers, informed me that I was developing cataracts. He gave me a good preview of what to expect and I progressed accordingly. When the time came to schedule the surgery, Dr. Myers asked for my preference in surgeons and I chose Dr. Randall Cole. Again, I was pleased with the continuum of care as I met with Dr. Cole and several members of his staff in preparation. These people possess two outstanding qualities; they know their specialty and they can communicate with the patients. We went through all of the necessary steps of financial discussion, pre-operative plans and requirements, the explanation of surgery and the post-operative follow-up. There were no surprises and their explanations pre-empted any of the usual patient concerns. The dialogue in the pre-op area was both professional and subdued. The certified staff went about their tasks but I never felt neglected. I was checked on many times and continually informed as to the progress towards surgery. I heard patients asking questions and the answers were readily delivered in a reassuring manner. The people at BoozmanHof have an excellent reputation and have put together a professional team. Not only was my experience excellent, I have heard this for decades. The Northwest Arkansas community is truly blessed to have this caliber of care and genuine concern. BoozmanHof is a class act. CataractsWhat is a cataract?A cataract is any cloudiness or opacity of the natural lens of the eye that prevents the light rays from passing through the lens normally. A cataract causes the light to be scattered inside the eye. This results in symptoms of glare and blurred vision. Cataracts generally progress very slowly over time resulting in gradual loss of vision. There are different types of cataracts, but the most common form that typically occurs in older people is a yellowish-brown discoloration of the lens that causes a change in color perception as well as blurred vision.
Symptoms include: Blurred, hazy, or cloudy vision, glare from bright sunlight, halos around lights at night, and loss of color discrimination Who gets cataracts?Cataract formation is a normal part of the aging process. Virtually everyone over the age of 70 has some degree of clouding or discoloration of their lens, even though some persons may not become aware of a change in vision until the cataract progresses over time. A lifetime of exposure to sunlight and genetic influences are factors that influence cataract formation. Also, trauma, medications, or diseases may cause some cataracts. Most people develop age-related cataracts at about the same rate in each eye, although sometimes one eye is more significantly affected than the other. How are cataracts diagnosed?A complete eye exam will determine whether you have a cataract and to what extent it is impacting your vision. Your examination will include a vision test, called a refraction, to see if your vision may be improved with glasses. You may also have your vision tested while an instrument shines light in your eye to see how much your vision is affected by glare. Your doctor will utilize an instrument, called a slit lamp, that functions like a microscope as he or she examines the lens of your eye. This allows your doctor to assess the extent of cataract formation. Your doctor will also examine all of the other parts of the eye, looking for any other problems that may affect your vision. |
Cataracts TreatmentWhile some vision loss can often be corrected with prescription glasses and contact lenses, for people who are significantly affected by cataracts, lens replacement surgery is the only method of treatment and correction. This procedure is performed as an outpatient (same day) procedure in an operating room with no need for hospital admission. During cataract surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one called an intraocular lens or IOL. In addition to offering the highest quality monofocal IOLs, BoozmanHof is proud to offer all leading premium lens options for our cataract patients, including the AcrySof® IQ Toric and IQ ReSTOR® 3.0 IOL, Crystalens® HD and Tecnis® Multifocal IOLs. Toric IOLs dramatically improve the quality of vision in patients with astigmatism. ReSTOR® IQ, Crystalens® HD and Tecnis® Multifocal IOL technologies significant enhance both the quality and range of patient vision and also reduce dependence on glasses for reading.
